| Overview | [ Top ] | [ Bottom ] |
 | We are in the heart of the Wild Coast, at the tip of the Sinangwana peninsula situated between two rivers: Sinangwana and Mpande, and facing over the Indian ocean. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre all our Traditional Mut huts overlook the Indian Ocean, likewise for our Restaurant, Bar and other facilities.
If you love and respect nature, wish to understand more about the Pondo/Xhosa culture and its traditions, then this is the place to visit. | | The Kraal concept was conceived during a 10-day vow of silence on a Vapasma meditation retreat in Thailand in the early 90s.
The aim of The Kraal is to a build a sustainable Pondo/Xhosa village, involving and respecting the local culture and traditions with as limited impact on the environment as possible. Enriching the locals' knowledge on eco-tourism and sustainable living in the heart of the Wild Coast.
Dillon, the owner, traveled for more than 5 years through 30 countries before returning to fulfill his vision of The Kraal Backpackers in Mpande.
Together with the local community, he hand-built the whole site, respecting the natural environment and the great Pondo culture.
The Kraal Backpackers has been proudly opened since July 1st 1998 and is dedicated to adventurers, and backpackers who seek for true rural African experience.
To this day, no other building structure along this stretch of Wild Coast has been built with such sensitivity to the surrounding environment and in respect of the Nature Conservation regulations. Hopefully in the future projects like the Kraal and its humanitarian ideas will be supported and promoted throughout remote poverty stricken areas of South Africa, and other countries.
We believe in constant training, education, and upliftment of our teams in all Eco-tourism business areas, to run their own projects efficiently and sustainably on a commission basis.
Humanity has no boundaries!
We are part of the Millennium Goals and created The Kraal Toddlers n.p.o. to take our actions to another level. | | The Aim is to empower our community members involved in the project.
How? By training, educating, uplifting our team in all Eco-tourism business areas, to run their own projects efficiently and sustainably on a commission basis. |

| Room Features |
| Accommodation is in dormitories or in our excellent camping site.
Traditional Xhosa mud huts retain and maintain good temperatures in a hot and humid climate such as that of the Wild Coast.
The dormitories are quite spacious, and have double bunk beds, you don’t need to be a monkey to climb on the top beds... so you can read, relax and sleep here in comfort. | | Our large den (entertainment and eating area) lets everyone find their own space, while the roof catches all our drinking water.
Come and enjoy our Swiss Cuisine while sipping a fresh wine from our bar selection. | | Enjoy the fresh air, listen to the waves breaking, watch the dolphins do their morning specials splash, while fish eagles and ravens soar above us.
And while the horses are getting ready for their morning beauty groom, the chickens strut their stuff! |
